Business Classifications

Food businesses are classified into four (4) groups based on the risk to food safety for the activities being undertaken. These are:

Class 1

Food Premises that handle un-packaged high risk foods for sale to vulnerable persons.

Examples:

  • Hospitals
  • Child Care Centres
  • Aged Care Services

Registration Required with Council: Yes

Class 2

Food premises that handle un-packaged high risk foods for sale to members of the public.

Examples:

  • Cafés
  • Restaurants
  • Food Vehicles

Class 3A

A food premises at which one or more of the following food handling activities occurs.

  • Preparation and/or cooking of potentially hazardous foods which are served to guests for immediate consumption at an accommodation getaway premises or;
  • Food made using a hot-fill process resulting in a product such as chutney, relish, salsa, tomato sauce or any other similar food, that:
    • Is made at a home-based or temporary food premises (i.e. a hired kitchen) and;
    • Has been heat treated to a temperature of not less than 85 degrees Celsius and then filled and sealed hot into its packaging and;
    • Is acidic (pH of less than 4.6) and;
    • Has salt or sugar or any other preservative added.

Class 3

Food Premises that handle un-packaged low risk foods and pre-packaged high risk foods requiring refrigeration.

Examples:

  • Service Stations
  • Warehouses
  • Distributors

Class 4

Food Premises that handle pre-packaged low risk foods or conduct food handling activities exempt by the Department of Health.

Examples:

  • Packaged Alcohol
  • Packaged Chips
  • Packaged Confectionery
  • Whole uncut fruit and vegetables
  • Wine tastings
  • Packaged cakes without cream
  • Low risk food including cut fruit at a sessional kindergarten or child care
  • Simple sausage sizzle where the sausages are cooked and served immediately and only include:
    • Sausages
    • Bread
    • Onions
    • Sauce

    Hamburgers and other high risk food are not to be included for a simple sausage sizzle.

Registration Required with Council: No. However you must notify council that you are selling food.
