Increase in illegal tyre dumping
Published on 07 March 2025
An increase in illegal dumping of tyres on the outskirts of Horsham has prompted extra surveillance from Horsham Rural City Council.
HRCC this week removed 21 tyres from roads on the city fringes, particularly near the Horsham North area.
It is suspected that many of the tyres had been used for burn-outs.
People caught dumping tyres face fines of up to $5,928.
In response, HRCC will be increasing patrols in the affected areas and is urging the public to report any suspicious activity.
Council is also collaborating with local tyre businesses to prevent customers from improperly disposing of used tyres to avoid the disposal fee.
Dumped car tyres release harmful chemicals as they break down, which can leach into the environment and groundwater, potentially poisoning animals and plants.
Discarded tyres are also a fire hazard, with tyre fires being notoriously difficult to control or extinguish.
For more information or to report suspicious activity, please contact HRCC. The public can also report illegal dumping on public land EPA Victoria on 1300 372 842.
