Preparing for Emergency > Heatwave
As temparatures rise so does the risk of contracting a heat related illness - a medical condition that results from the body's inability to cope with heating and cooling itself. In fact, heat kills more people than tornadoes, hurricanes, lightning and flash floods - combined.
Horsham Rural City Council has developed a Heatwave Plan for the Horsham Rural City municipality. Central to this plan is the Department of Health state-wide Heat Health Alert System 2014/15 which notifies councils, hospitals and health and community service providers of forecast heatwave conditions which are likely to affect human health.
In the Wimmera we are used to long, hot and dry summers but we need to be mindful that heat affects everyone and be aware of our families and neighbours during prolonged spells of hot weather.
The Department of Health and Human Services website has a number of ways to prepare for and keep cool during a heatwave.
The current Heatwave Plan for Victoria is available on the Department of Health and Human Services website.
